Route of the Cathars

The Route of the Cathars is a trek that crosses the Pyrenees and that was used by the cathars in their flight from the Inquisition. The path begins in Berga (Catalonia) and arrives to Montségur (Ariège, France), although you have the possibility to walk it in the opposite direction.

It is a trek that alternates long and hard stages with lighter ones, including spectacular views and culture all along the way. An unique opportunity to enjoy one week and a half of adventure and nature in its purest form!

Stage 1: Berga – Peguera
Distance: 12,66 km.
Arrival at Berga by your own means. Start of the route towards Peguera via Queralt. Short but intense stage. Dinner and accommodation.

Stage 2: Peguera – Gósol
Distance: 16,7 km.
After having breakfast, you will leave towards Gósol. Technical stage with spectacular landscapes. You will walk by El Ferrús before you arrive at Feners and Gósol. Dinner and accommodation.

Stage 3: Gósol – Bagà
Distance: 23,8 km.
Breakfast. Flat stage that will take you to Bagà, following the GR marks. You will pass La Portella and Coll de Bauma, and you will have a fantastic view over Pedraforca’s north wall and the valley of Gresolet. Follow the route to Cal Cerdanyola. Dinner and accommodation.

Stage 4: Bagà – Bellver de Cerdanya
Distance: 23,21 km.
Breakfast. Beginning of the stage that will take you to Gréixer. You will walk by the Sant Jordi mountain hut, Cortals de l’Ingla and Collet del Cap del Ras. Arrival at Bellver, dinner and accommodation.

Stage 5: Bellver de Cerdanya – Porta
Distance: 35,52 km.
Breakfast. Early start towards Cal Jan de la Llosa. This is one of the hardest stages of the route. You will reach a maximum altitude of 2521 m., at Coll de la Portella Blanca. From there, the way is downhill to Porta. Dinner and accommodation.

Stage 6: Porta – Mérens-les-Vals
Distance: 21,91 km.
Breakfast. From Porta you have to take the way that passes Coll de Puymorens towards Mérens-les-Vals. You will walk by l’Hospitalet-près-l’Andorre and arrive at Mérens. Dinner and accommodation.

Stage 7: Mérens-les-Vals – Ascou
Distance: 19,98 km.
Breakfast. You will leave towards Orgeix walking through Bordes de Coual and Coll de Joux (1701 m.). From here, you will descend to Ascou, at 1005 m. Dinner and accommodation.

Stage 8: Ascou – Comus
Distance: 20,86 km.
Breakfast. Start towards Sorgeat and Coll d’Ijou. You will reach Pla de la Grada and go on to Coll de Balaguès. The landscape will impress you with its colours on your way to Montaillou and, later, to Comus. Dinner and accommodation.

Stage 9: Comus – Montségur
Distance: 16,10 km.
Breakfast. Last stage, short but still hard. You will walk to Montségur by the Frau gorges, exceptional place. Arrival at Montségur, dinner and accommodation.

Stage 10: Montségur – Foix
After having breakfast, transport to Foix. We recommend visiting the Catle. End of our services.
